Shakyan Tea
Our Journey
The journey of Shakyan Tea began in 2021. Inspired by a vision to elevate Sri Lankan tea beyond the traditional methods of leaf picking, we aimed to add real value to every cup. This idea sparked from a simple photo frame I saw on Facebook, highlighting the potential of branding Sri Lankan tea to a global audience.
With the guidance of the Galle-Kalutara Estate Owners Association, the Ministry of Industry, and the Tea Research Institute, we explored hand-made tea production at the National Institute of Plantation. Despite extensive training, many challenges arose during implementation.
Overcoming Challenges
The first major hurdle was the lack of a proper dryer. After numerous experiments, I designed a dryer, but it failed. Eventually, through persistent effort, we imported and improved three dryers from Australia. Another challenge was perfecting the tea production process to achieve the right quality. Countless experiments, sleepless nights, and discarded leaves led to the discovery of the optimal drying time and temperature.
Our Pride
Today, we proudly bring tea leaves from our own plantations to our factory, crafting each product with care and precision. Our team includes four dedicated employees, with invaluable support from various institutions:
Ministry of Industry and Tea Research Institute
Divisional Secretary of Agalawatta
Vidatha Technical Officer and Staff
Development Officer of the Ministry of Enterprise Development
Special recognition goes to Mr. Manoch Withanage, our professional tea taster, and to my wife, W.D. Oshadi Nisansala, who manages sales promotion while handling numerous responsibilities.
This journey has been full of obstacles but driven by the desire to elevate the Ceylon Tea brand globally through innovation, quality, and new discoveries.
We look forward to hearing from you regarding our fine Sri Lankan tea.
